Municipal Water

An assured water supply for all Albertans is a priority goal of Alberta's Water for Life Strategy. Water is a key resource to support not only agriculture but also communities and businesses.

In southern Alberta, the irrigation storage and delivery system conveys raw water to 50 cities, towns and villages, farmyard, acreages along with commercial and industrial facilities to support the primary goal of the Water for Life Strategy.

For cities, towns and villages this means easy access to water for the community drinking water treatment facility to support:
-household drinking water,
-water business and industry including agri-food processing faciltities, car washes and golf courses
-the watering of yards, gardens, and parks,
-ice production in hockey and curling rinks,
-water to support swimming pools and spray parks.

The annual savings to municipalities receiving raw water through irrigation infrastructure is about $40 million dollars.
