The only domestic source of sugar in Canada is centered on the southern Alberta town of Taber. The rich, deep soils and temperate climate of the region make it ideal for the production of sugar beets, and the availability of water through supplementary irrigation completes the cycle. Sugar beets are a rotation crop, planted once every four years in early spring.
