Potatoes

In southern Alberta long, warm summer days and cool nights and regular and consistent irrigation watering helps farmers grow top quality potatoes. In 2022 potatoes were grown on almost 62,000 acres of land in irrigation districts. Once the potatoes are harvested they are sent to several different potato processing plants and made into french fries, potato chips and other potato products.

Alberta is also Canada's largest exporter of seed potatoes to other countries including Idaho in the United States. In all, 90 varieties of potatoes are grown in Alberta.

More information on potatoes grown under irrigation in Alberta can be found on the Alberta Potato Growers website.
